CHEMISTRY

Chemistry

Chemistry presents the first quantative and mathematical science in the high school curriculum, usually following biology. Students learn topics such as equilibrium, stoichiometry, and quantum theory. The key to success in chemistry lies in a student’s understanding of the periodic table (and all the information it presents) and their dimensional analysis skills. Like math, chemistry is a hierarchal subject in which strong foundations are necessary in order to be successful in future lessons.

The most common areas of concern for must students in chemistry are:

  • Atoms, Compounds, and Ions

  • Balancing Chemical Equations

  • Stoichiometry

  • Periodic Table Trends

  • Chemical Bonds

  • Ideal Gas Law

  • Acids and Bases

  • Enthalpy and Entropy

  • Redox Reactions

  • Rate Laws

AP Chemistry

AP Chemistry touches upon many of the same topics covered in regular chemistry but much more extensively. Additionally, AP Chemistry students must have much better math skills and should be able to apply algebraic and geometric understanding to problem solving. Although initially it may seem daunting, AP Chemistry can be easily conquered with a little extra help and of practice.
